Visa reported that Black Friday weekend e-commerce sales across smart phones, tablets and PCs conducted by U.S. Visa accountholders increased 30% to $7.8 billion.

New York -- Visa reported that Black Friday weekend e-commerce sales across smart phones, tablets and PCs conducted by U.S. Visa accountholders increased 30% to $7.8 billion.

The company also noted that Cyber Monday ruled the five-day period with spending on Visa cards up 28% to $2.6 billion while Thanksgiving Day saw a 30% jump to nearly $1 billion.

Wal-Mart Stores on Friday kicked off its annual shareholders meeting by announcing a $15 billion stock buyback that will replace a previous $15 billion repurchase plan begun a year ago.

New York City -- Wal-Mart Stores on Friday kicked off its annual shareholders meeting by announcing a $15 billion stock buyback that will replace a previous $15 billion repurchase plan begun a year ago.

The meeting, attended by approximately 15,000 people, including Wal-Mart employees from around the globe, was held at the Bud Walton Arena on the campus of the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Ark.

Mobile commerce was top of mind at the National Retail Federation’s 100th Annual Convention & EXPO in New York City. There is now widespread agreement among analysts and retailers alike that smart phones are rapidly evolving into core shopping tools by omni-channel shoppers.


“There was marked increased mobile shopping traffic this year compared to the 2009 holiday shopping season,” said Phil McKoy, VP technology, Target Corp., Minneapolis.

Starbucks announced the launch of mobile payment in all U.S. company-operated stores, allowing customers to pay for in-store purchases with select smart phones.

Seattle -- Starbucks announced the launch of mobile payment in all U.S. company-operated stores, allowing customers to pay for in-store purchases with select smart phones. The company said test markets in Seattle, Northern California, New York and more than 1,000 Starbucks in domestic Target stores have successfully used the program.

Although I may use hyberbole on occasion (but only to make a point), this is not one of those times. They will truly change the industry as we know it. 2011 will be the tipping point — the point where the line on the penetration chart crosses over. More than 50% of cell phones in the United States will be smart phones versus functional phones, according to Nielsen.
