Family Dollar is under pressure from activist investor Carl Icahn to put itself up for sale. The company has adopted a shareholder rights plan, or "poison pill."

Family Dollar Stores, announced that it has named Jeffrey Thomas senior VP-merchandise operations.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores, announced that it has named Jeffrey Thomas senior VP-merchandise operations. He replaces Scott Zucker, who left the company at the end of May.

Thomas joined Family Dollar in 2003 as a director of vendor performance. He went on to assume roles with increasing responsibilities, and in 2013, was named VP-merchant services.

It is one of the fastest roll-outs in the industry, with 3,500 installations already completed and deployments in 120 more stores each week, according to Checkpoint.

Shrink is an unavoidable fact of life for retailers. But by leveraging electronic article surveillance (EAS) technology that places security tags on items, retailers can minimize the frequency and financial impact of shrink.

Matthews, N.C.-based Family Dollar Stores, Inc. has been using EAS technology to reduce shrink at select high-risk locations for more than 15 years. However, about three years ago, the retailer determined that using EAS tags on higher-priced items at all of its roughly 7,900 stores would help control external shrink throughout the chain.

Dollar stores are not just for lower- and middle-income shoppers.

Chicago -- Dollar stores are not just for lower- and middle-income shoppers. In fact, half (50%) of respondents from the highest-income households ($150k+) say that they are shopping at dollar stores the same amount this year compared to last year, with 10%  say they are doing so more than last year, according to new research from Mintel. Only 32% of respondents from the highest-income households claim not to shop at dollar stores.

Family Dollar Stores reported that net income for the quarter ended March 2 edged up to $140.1 million, compared with $136.4 million in the year-ago period.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores reported Wednesday that net income for the quarter ended March 2 edged up to $140.1 million, compared with $136.4 million in the year-ago period.

Sales increased 17.7% to $2.89 billion from $2.46 billion, and same-store sales rose 2.9%.

Family Dollar Stores said it has named Colin McGinnis as SVP store operations support, store development and procurement.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores said Friday it has named Colin McGinnis as SVP store operations support, store development and procurement. He will report to Barry Sullivan, EVP store operations.

McGinnis joined Family Dollar in August of 2004 as a regional VP and, in 2006, he was named VP store operations support and process improvement. Most recently, he added additional responsibility for store services, procurement and store development.

Deloitte advises that CPG companies may not be keeping pace with the explosive growth of the $56 billion dollar store industry, and should act now to maximize market share and profits.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores reported Wednesday that net income for the quarter ended Aug. 25 inched up to $80.9 million, from $79.8 million in the same period last year. Results were impacted by an $11.5 million litigation charge stemming from the preliminary settlement of a lawsuit in New York.

Sales for the quarter rose 10.8% to $2.36 billion, a record for the company, and same-store sales increased 5.4%.

Family Dollar Stores said it plans to settle a class-action matter with more than 1,700 New York store managers who filed suit on claims of unpaid overtime wages.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores said Wednesday it plans to settle a class-action matter with more than 1,700 New York store managers who filed suit on claims of unpaid overtime wages.

The preliminary settlement provides for a maximum payment of $14 million by Family Dollar. Settlement terms are pending court approval, and the discounter plans to record a fourth quarter charge to cover the costs.

I’m talking about those people who shop both the high-end luxury retailers and the discount or even dollar stores. I recently read an article that indicated one-quarter of all Nordstrom shoppers also shop at the Dollar Store. And, I started to ask myself if this trend is here to stay.

Family Dollar Stores Inc.'s second-quarter earnings rose 10.7% as increased customer traffic fueled higher sales.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar Stores Inc.'s second-quarter earnings rose 10.7% as increased customer traffic fueled higher sales. Its results topped analysts’ expectations.

The discounter said its net profit rose to $136.4 million for its fiscal second quarter ended Feb. 25, 2012, from $123.2 million a year earlier.

Family Dollar today showed why dollar stores are such a hot commodity right now by reporting a comparable-store sales increase of 5.1% for the second quarter ended Feb. 26.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar reported today a comparable-store sales increase of 5.1% for the second quarter ended Feb. 26. Net sales for the quarter increased 8.3% to $2.26 billion, from $2.09 billion last year. According to the retialer, warmer weather earlier in the year as well as strong performance in its consumable and seasonal categories helped drive sales.
