Walgreens appoints chief strategy officer

Walgreens announced the appointment of Brad Fluegel as senior VP and chief strategy officer.

Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreens on Thursday announced the appointment of Brad Fluegel as senior VP and chief strategy officer. Fluegel will be responsible for corporate strategy, business development, project management and the corporate consulting team while also working on venture capital efforts.

Fluegel joined Walgreens after previously serving as executive in residence at Health Evolution Partners. Before that he was EVP and chief strategy and external affairs officer of Wellpoint, a large health benefits company.

Walgreens announced several new senior management roles, including an expanded role for CFO Wade Miquelon and the appointment of current senior VP and chief strategy officer Robert Zimmerman as the lead executive responsible for the Walgreens-Alliance Boots' "synergy team."

Simon names chief investment officer

Simon Property Group announced the appointment of Matthew Lentz as executive VP and chief investment officer.

Indianapolis -- Simon Property Group announced the appointment of Matthew Lentz as executive VP and chief investment officer.

In this newly created position, Lentz will be responsible for SPG's investment activity including the company's international investments. Lentz, who will be based in Simon's New York office, will serve as a key member of SPG's executive team and report directly to David Simon, SPG's chairman and CEO.
 
Lentz previously was a managing director and portfolio manager at PointState Capital in New York.

OfficeMax CMO departs

OfficeMax said Friday that its executive VP and chief merchandising office Ryan Vero has resigned, effective Dec. 2.

Naperville, Ill. -- OfficeMax said Friday that its executive VP and chief merchandising office Ryan Vero has resigned, effective Dec. 2.

Michael Lewis, executive VP and president of retail, will continue to provide oversight to the marketing and merchandising teams, according to OfficeMax.

OfficeMax said it is initiating a search for a chief merchandising officer immediately.

OfficeMax appoints chief digital officer

OfficeMax announced that it has appointed Jim Barr as executive VP and chief digital officer, effective Nov. 14.

Naperville, Ill. -- OfficeMax announced that it has appointed Jim Barr as executive VP and chief digital officer, effective Nov. 14. Barr will be responsible for all aspects of the company's e-commerce business and for driving its multichannel digital strategy.

Barr has been working with the OfficeMax e-commerce business in an advisory capacity since July 2011. Prior to that, he served as president of Sears Holdings' online division.

Rite Aid appoints chief communications officer

Rite Aid Corp. announced Monday it has named Susan Henderson as senior VP and chief communications officer to replace Karen Rugen, who retired last month.

Camp Hill, Pa. -- Rite Aid Corp. announced Monday it has named Susan Henderson as senior VP and chief communications officer to replace Karen Rugen, who retired last month.

Henderson previously worked for Chicago-based strategy execution and employment engagement firm Gagen MacDonald; before that, she was VP communications for Harley-Davidson. She has also worked for the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co. in Chicago, Kohl's Department Stores and the Miller Brewing Co.

Borders executive VP and chief merchant resigns

Borders Group executive VP and chief merchandising officer Michele Cloutier has resigned, Borders said in a late afternoon Friday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Ann Arbor, Mich. -- Borders Group executive VP and chief merchandising officer Michele Cloutier has resigned, Borders said in a late afternoon Friday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

It is the latest in a string of high-level departures from the bookseller as it struggles to emerge from bankruptcy protection.

On Thursday, the company received a deadline extension until mid-October to file a plan to restructure. An attorney for Borders said parts of the company could be sold in as quickly as two weeks.
