Online shopping is showing rapid growth compared to the rest of the retail trade sector, with the number of establishments growing 27.4% between 2011 and 2012, according to new U.S. Census Bureau statistics released today.

Washington, D.C. -- Online shopping is showing rapid growth compared to the rest of the retail trade sector, with the number of establishments growing 27.4% between 2011 and 2012, according to new U.S. Census Bureau statistics released today. Drawn from County Business Patterns: 2012, the new data provides the only detailed annual information on the number of establishments, employees and payroll for nearly 1,200 industries at the national, state and county levels.

A generational shift is afoot that’s about to upend the retail landscape. 

The root cause of the impending transformation lies in changing demographics. By the decade’s end, millennials, also know as Generation Y, will displace baby boomers as the biggest consumer-spending group in the United States. Broadly defined as the generation born from 1980 to 2000, these “echo boomers” will account for approximately $1.4 trillion in spending by 2020, or about 30% of total retail sales, according to Accenture research.

Retail sales increased in the month of August but came in at a much slower pace than anticipated, according to the National Retail Federation.

Washington, D.C. -- Retail sales increased in the month of August but came in at a much slower pace than anticipated, according to the National Retail Federation. Sales (excluding automobiles, gas stations and restaurants) increased 0.1% seasonally adjusted from last month, and increased 3.9% unadjusted year-over-year.

U.S. retail and food services sales totaled $422.8 billion last month, according to new advance estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Washington, D.C. – U.S. retail and food services sales totaled $422.8 billion last month, according to new advance estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau. This represents a 0.4% increase from $421.2 billion in the prior month, and a more substantial 5.7% increase from $399.9 billion in the same month last year.

The numbers tell the story: According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are more than 52 million Hispanics living in the United States, making people of Hispanic origin the nation's largest ethnic or race minority. The Bureau forecasts that by 2050, this demographic will number 132.8 million — or about 30% of the population. By 2015, one in three newborns will be of Latino descent. And while the overall U.S. population is getting older, the Latino community remains young: More than 60% of the U.S. Hispanic population is under 35, and 75% is under 45.
