Walgreen Q1 profit falls 4.5%, misses Street

Walgreen Co. reported that profit for the quarter ended Nov. 30 dropped 4.5% to $554 million, compared with $580 million in the year-ago period.

Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreen Co. reported Wednesday that profit for the quarter ended Nov. 30 dropped 4.5% to $554 million, compared with $580 million in the year-ago period. The drugstore operator cited a slow flu season and the decision to leave Express Scripts pharmacy network among the reasons for the performance dip.

Revenue for the quarter climbed 4.7% to $18.16 billion – a chain sales record – but missed Wall Street’s forecasted $18.24 billion in revenue. Total same-store sales rose 2.5%; front-end comps increased 2.4%.

Report: Walgreens to sell health insurance

Walgreens plans to start selling health insurance to customers this fall, according to CNN Money.

New York City -- Walgreens plans to start selling health insurance to customers this fall, according to CNN Money.

The drugstore chain will sell health insurance products with different price ranges and coverage levels through a private health insurance exchange, the report said.

Walgreen up, Rite Aid down in November

Walgreens on Friday reported that its same-store sales rose 3.2% in November.

New York City -- Walgreens on Friday reported that its same-store sales rose 3.2% in November. The drugstore operator’s total sales rose 8.6% to $5.83 billion. (Duane Reade stores, acquired in April 2010, contributed 2.8% points to the total sales increase for the month. But those stores are not included in the same-store sales report.)

Meanwhile, Rite Aid Corp. reported that its November same-store sales fell 1.3% due to the introduction of new generic drugs and a decline in prescriptions resulting partly from a milder flu season.
