Doubling your store count is the type of growth most retailers seek. So 38-unit, Louisiana-based grocery retailer Rouses didn’t complain back in 2007 when it upped its store count in Louisiana and Mississippi from 15 to 32 by purchasing the regional Sav-A-Center chain from A&P.  However, for a family-owned business that had previously grown organically, this sudden spurt in its number and distribution of stores created a few issues.

A&P president and CEO Sam Martin will star in the retailer's new integrated marketing campaign highlighting the company’s vision to be the best neighborhood food and drug store, the company said.

Montvale, N.J. -- A&P president and CEO Sam Martin will star in the retailer's new integrated marketing campaign highlighting the company’s vision to be the best neighborhood food and drug store, the company said Wednesday.

The campaign’s theme is “shopping just got a whole lot better,” and it will mark the first time that A&P will run one marketing campaign across all of its A&P, The Food Emporium, Pathmark, Superfresh and Waldbaum’s stores.

CAMP HILL, Pa. — Rite Aid has appointed David Kelly as group VP construction, the retail pharmacy chain said Monday.

Kelly, who has worked in real estate and development for more than 25 years, will start work May 31 and will have overall responsibility for all store planning and construction services, in addition to having a role in various segmentation initiatives such as Wellness stores, value stores and co-branded Save-A-Lot Rite Aid stores, reporting directly SVP, CFO and chief administrative officer Frank Vitrano.

New York City -- A&P plans to close 32 stores in six states, including four in the New York City area, Crain’s New York reported.

Among the stores slated to close are 14 Pathmarks, seven Super Fresh shops, four A&Ps and three Waldbaums, according to the report.

A&P operates 395 stores in eight states and the District of Columbia under the banners A&P, Waldbaum's, Pathmark, Best Cellars, The Food Emporium, Super Fresh and Food Basics. The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in December.

Brisbane, Calif. -- Bebe Stores reported a loss for its second quarter as bad weather cut into sales and it closed some stores.

The clothing company posted a loss of $2.7 million for the quarter compared with a profit of $2.4 million in the same period last year.

Revenue fell 2% to $132.7 million for the period that ended Jan. 1.

Same-store sales were flat for the quarter, compared with a drop of 22.5% a year earlier.

Montvale, N.J. - The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. on Sunday filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as it struggles with enormous debt and increased competition from low-priced peers.

The 151-year-old company operates 395 stores around the Northeast under several banners, including A&P, Waldbaum's, The Food Emporium, Super Fresh, Pathmark and Food Basics.

Montvale, N.J. -- Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. said late Tuesday it will sell six Pathmark stores for $89.8 million. The company said it has entered into an agreement with Winstanley Enterprises LLC, which will acquire six Pathmark stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.

CEO Sam Martin said the deal is part of the company's turnaround strategy. Last month, after announcing its second-quarter loss had doubled from a year earlier, the company said its turnaround plan, including cutting costs, would help improve business.
