CVS is adding a feature to its mobile app that allows customers to check for potential drug interactions by comparing over-the-counter medications they buy with existing over-the-counter and prescription medications they already take.

Customers can enter the name or scan the UPC barcode of drugs and have the app’s drug interaction checker automatically compare available product details against medications in their secure personal pharmacy histories.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has partnered with other international regulatory and law enforcement agencies to take action against more than 9,600 illegal online pharmacies this week.

Washington, D.C. – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has partnered with other international regulatory and law enforcement agencies to take action against more than 9,600 illegal online pharmacies this week. The pharmacies were illegally selling unapproved prescription medications to consumers and actions ranged from warnings to website seizures to the confiscation of more than $40 million worth of unauthorized medications.

Walmart is partnering with health services company Humana Inc. to offer a new prescription drug plan for insured employers and employees. Humana’s pharmacy benefits management subsidiary, Humana Pharmacy Solutions, will now offer the Walmart Rx Network.

Managed care company Health Net Inc. announced it will sell its Medicare Part D stand-alone prescription drug business to CVS Caremark for $160 million.

New York City -- Managed care company Health Net Inc. announced it will sell its Medicare Part D stand-alone prescription drug business to CVS Caremark for $160 million.

The business has about 400,000 members in 49 states and Washington, D.C., with annual revenue of approximately $490 million.

The deal is scheduled to close during the second quarter, pending approval from antitrust regulators.

Walgreen has reimbursed the government for billing errors made between June 1, 2006, and Aug. 31, 2008, and admitted no wrongdoing in the settlement.

Camp Hill, Pa. -- Rite Aid Corp. has agreed to pay $2.1 million to Massachusetts towns to settle alleged prescription drug overcharges under the workers’ compensation insurance system.

Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley said Wednesday that Rite Aid has overcharged state agencies and at least 100 cities and towns to fill prescriptions for people receiving workers' compensation since 2002.

CVS Caremark Corp. said Tuesday that federal antitrust regulators cleared its planned acquisition of insurer Universal American Corp.'s Medicare Part D prescription drug business.

Woonsocket, R.I.  -- CVS Caremark Corp. said Tuesday that federal antitrust regulators cleared its planned acquisition of insurer Universal American Corp.'s Medicare Part D prescription drug business.

CVS and Universal American said the Federal Trade Commission has ended a mandatory review of the $1.25 billion deal. Universal American shareholders and state regulators still need to clear the deal.

The companies announced the transaction Dec. 31, and they expect it to close by the end of the second quarter.

Woonsocket, R.I. -- CVS Caremark Corp. said Friday it will pay $1.25 billion to buy Universal American Corp.'s Medicare prescription drug services unit. The deal will more than double the size of the chain’s Medicare drug business.

CVS said it pursued the deal because with the country's population aging, a growing percentage of Americans will get their prescription drug coverage from Medicare.
