New York -- Visa Inc. has entered into an agreement with mobile commerce provider ROAM, an Ingenico company, to enable merchants of all sizes to accept electronic payments using mobile technology. The companies aim to displace cash payments by expanding the reach of electronic payments to new merchant categories, and by making it easier for merchants and acquirers to take advantage of secure mobile acceptance solutions.

Mobile payments have more than doubled in popularity reaching over 33% of survey respondents, according to IDC Financial Insights’ eighth annual Consumer Payments Survey.

Framingham, Mass. -- Mobile payments have more than doubled in popularity reaching over 33% of survey respondents, according to IDC Financial Insights’ eighth annual Consumer Payments Survey.

The new report, “Business Strategy: Results from the 2012 Consumer Payments Survey,” found that those that of whose had made a mobile payment, more than half used PayPal Mobile (56%), with Amazon Payments and Apple's iTunes service statistically tied at about 40%.

A shift in consumer payment habits has had a noticeable impact on merchants that process a large volume of low-value transactions. Credit cards, historically associated with payment for higher-priced items that required financing, have become a preferred payment method for routine purchases that once were covered by pocket change.

MasterCard Worldwide announced that Subway, the nation’s largest sandwich chain, will accept MasterCard’s PayPass contactless payments at more than 7,000 U.S. locations by the end of first quarter 2012.

Consumers will now have the option of paying for their meal by simply tapping a MasterCard PayPass-enabled card or device at the register. PayPass does not require customers to sign receipts for purchases under $50.

A Wednesday report by Bloomberg said that Google plans to start testing a mobile-payment service at stores in New York and San Francisco within four months.

San Francisco -- A Wednesday report by Bloomberg said that Google plans to start testing a mobile-payment service at stores in New York and San Francisco within four months.

Citing unnamed sources, Bloomberg said Google will pay to install thousands of special cash-register systems from VeriFone Systems at merchant locations. The plans haven’t yet been made public.
