As expected, Hurricane Sandy left its mark on Rite Aid's monthly sales as the chain reported a decline in comps for November.

The company said the 3% decrease in same-store sales for the five-week period ended Saturday included a 0.5% decrease in front-end comps and a 4.2% decrease in pharmacy comps, while same-store prescription count increased 2.2% compared with the same time last year.

With annual enrollment open until Dec. 7, 2012, for 2013 Medicare plans, the Humana-Walmart Preferred Rx Plan announced that it offers one monthly plan premium of $18.50 a month for beneficiaries in all 50 states and Washington, D.C., regardless of where they live.

After months of slumping sales following its split with Express Scripts Holding Co., Walgreens said it has forged a new multi-year contract with the prescription provider and will begin filling Express Scripts prescriptions on Sept. 15.

Walgreen had stopped filling prescriptions for Express Scripts after a contract between the companies ended last year. Express Scripts ended the contract because it said Walgreens wanted a premium compared to what Express Scripts paid other pharmacies.

Walgreens will purchase the pharmacy patient files and transfer them to nearby Walgreens pharmacies. Patients whose prescription files are being transferred and who have had a prescription filled within the last two years will be notified by letter once the transaction has been completed later in February.

Deerfield, Ill. — Walgreens has transformed 68 locations in the Indianapolis market into health and daily living destinations.

The drug store chain hosted a ribbon-cutting ceremony Thursday at a store located on 16th and Meridian in Indianapolis. On hand at the ceremony were Walgreens president and CEO Greg Wasson, former Indianpolis Colts coach Tony Dungy and Sen. Richard Lugar, R-Ind.

The stores are part of Walgreens' pilot program that launched last year in Chicago.

The free app, available on the iPhone, Android and Blackberry platforms, allows Shopko pharmacy customers to request refills, review active prescription details — including expiration date, refills remaining and overdue refills — set up dosage reminders and receive email/text notifications when a prescription refill is ready.

Managed care company Health Net Inc. announced it will sell its Medicare Part D stand-alone prescription drug business to CVS Caremark for $160 million.

New York City -- Managed care company Health Net Inc. announced it will sell its Medicare Part D stand-alone prescription drug business to CVS Caremark for $160 million.

The business has about 400,000 members in 49 states and Washington, D.C., with annual revenue of approximately $490 million.

The deal is scheduled to close during the second quarter, pending approval from antitrust regulators.

While Zellers pharmacies are money-makers, keeping them open while Target closes the stores for remodeling would be costly and complicated, according to the report.

The potential suitors for the files are likely to include Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. and Katz Group Canada Ltd., the report said.

Total drugstore sales for the 30 weeks ended September 24, 2011 increased 0.9% to $14.535 billion, from $14.407 billion in last year’s like period. Prescription sales accounted for 68.4% of total drugstore sales, and third-party prescription sales was 96.4% of pharmacy sales.

Express Scripts processes about 90 million prescriptions that will be filled at Walgreen stores in fiscal 2011, which will bring Walgreen about $5.3 billion in revenue.

CVS and Universal American said the Federal Trade Commission has ended a mandatory review of the $1.25 billion deal. Universal American shareholders and state regulators still need to clear the deal.

The companies announced the transaction Dec. 31, and they expect it to close by the end of the second quarter.
