McDonald's comps slip in Q1, profit inches up

McDonald's Corp. reported that net income for the quarter ended March 31 rose about 1% to $1.27 billion, from $1.26 billion last year.

Oak Brook, Ill. -- McDonald's Corp. reported Friday that net income for the quarter ended March 31 rose about 1% to $1.27 billion, from $1.26 billion last year. Total revenue also rose 1%, to $6.6 billion from $6.5 billion.

Same-store sales dipped, however, impacted said McDonald’s by a tightened eating-out environment during the quarter.

At home, same-store sales dipped 1.2%.

McDonald’s global comps dip 1.9% in January

McDonald's Corp. reported that global same-store sales decreased 1.9% in January, hurt by weakened performance outside the U.S.

By segment, comps in the U.S. rose 0.9%, but decreased 2.1% in Europe and dropped 9.5% in the Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa.
 
Systemwide sales for the month increased 0.3%, or 0.7% in constant currencies.

McDonald's global same-store sales rise 3.7% in August

McDonald’s Corp. reported that same-store sales overall increased 3.7% in the month of August.

Oak Brook, Ill. -- McDonald’s Corp. reported Tuesday that same-store sales overall increased 3.7% in the month of August.

By segment, same-store sales rose 3% in the U.S., 3.1% in Europe, and a hearty 5.7% in Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa.

Systemwide sales for the month increased 1.2%.

McDonald’s Corp. is testing a mobile payments service with PayPal in 30 McDonald’s locations in France.

Using the service, McDonald's customers can order food on smartphones through a McDonald's application, or online, and then pay for their food with PayPal via either the McDonald’s mobile app or a web browser. There is a separate line in the test locations to pick up the meals, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune.

Walgreens names ex-McDonald's CEO as chairman

Walgreens said that it has named retired McDonald’s CEO James Skinner as its new non-executive chairman of the board.

Deerfield, Ill. -- Walgreens said Thursday that it has named retired McDonald’s CEO James Skinner as its new non-executive chairman of the board.

Skinner has served on the Walgreens board since 2005. He will succeed Al McNally, who has been non-executive chairman since 2009.

Walgreens said the change "is consistent with its board of directors succession and rotational planning process."

McDonald's global comps up 3.3% in May

McDonald's Corp. reported that global same-store sales grew 3.3% in May, led by a 4.4% gain in the United States and 2.9% growth in Europe.

The Asia/Pacific, Middle East and Africa were down 1.7%.

McDonald’s Corp. said that same-store sales on the global front rose 3.3% in April, led by European results (up 3.5%) but followed closely by the United States. (up 3.3%).

Study ranks McDonald’s and Wal-Mart among Top 10 companies for leadership

McDonald’s and Wal-Mart Stores are among the Top 20 companies in the world for leadership, taking the No. 6 and No. 8 spots respectively, according to an annual study by global management firm Hay Group.

McDonald’s Corp. announced that vice chairman and CEO Jim Skinner will retire on June 30.

McDonald’s revenue, operating income up in Q4 and full year

McDonald’s Corp. reported that consolidated revenues for fiscal 2011 rose 12% to a record-high $27 billion.

Oak Brook, Ill. -- McDonald’s Corp. reported Tuesday that consolidated revenues for fiscal 2011 rose 12% to a record-high $27 billion. The restaurant chain also said that global same-store sales increased 5.6% for the year ended Dec. 31, with positive comps across all geographic segments for every quarter.

"During 2011, McDonald's continued momentum drove higher profitability and market share gains as we fortified our leadership position around the world," said McDonald's CEO Jim Skinner.

McDonald’s to build its biggest store ever, in London for 2012 Olympics

McDonald’s Corp. plans to build the largest restaurant in its system as part of its role as official restaurant of the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

New York City -- McDonald’s Corp. plans to build the largest restaurant in its system as part of its role as official restaurant of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The chain has been an Olympics sponsor since 1976.

Speaking in a global webcast on July 20, McDonald's UK CEO Jill McDonald said the planned restaurant will span 32,290 sq.-ft. over two levels, and will have a kitchen four times standard size to accommodate the crowds. The chain says it expects to serve 1.75 million meals during the games, which run from July 27 to Aug. 12, 2012.
