Chicago – Almost all of the top 100 public retailers (97%) consider federal, state and local regulations as a risk factor, according to a new analysis of 10K filings from the largest 100 U.S. public retailers by BDO, LLP. Only general economic conditions (100%) was cited by more retailers, and this marks the highest percentage of public retailers citing regulations as a risk in the seven years BDO has been performing this analysis.

Seattle -- Starbucks Coffee Co. has appointed Deverl Maserang as executive VP leading the company’s global supply chain organization, effective June 3. He will be accountable for end-to-end supply chain operations globally spanning manufacturing, engineering, procurement, distribution, planning, transportation, inventory management and worldwide sourcing.

Maserang joins Starbucks from Chiquita Brands International, where he led the Global Value Chain for Chiquita and Fresh Express.

With 100,000 different products in stock and all items in its warehouse sold out more than three times per week, Gekas uses the low-cost system from Heads, a real-time retail application vendor, to integrate and streamline its entire supply chain, from procurement and its central warehouse to customer sales.

HSN Inc. said that it has appointed CFO Judy Schmeling to the additional role of COO, effective immediately.

St. Petersburg. Fla. – HSN Inc. said Wednesday that it has appointed CFO Judy Schmeling to the additional role of COO, effective immediately. Schmeling has been serving as HSN's executive VP and CFO since 2001.

In her new role, Schmeling will be responsible for supply chain operations and customer care functions, in addition to providing ongoing leadership for finance and IT.

The parent to the Ugg Australia and Teva labels said the platform will replace EDI and point solutions with a multi-enterprise network solution connecting external supply chain partners to Deckers’ ERP system and providing real-time performance updates.

Minneapolis — Supervalu has elected Rite Aid chairman, president and CEO John Standley and Cerberus COO and general counsel Mark A. Neporent to its board of directors.


Standley has spent the past 20 years in executive leadership roles in the grocery and pharmacy retail business. He became Rite Aid Corporation’s president and COO in September 2008, was appointed to the Rite Aid board of directors in 2009 and was named CEO in June 2010. He was elected chairman of Rite Aid’s board of directors in June 2012.

Supervalu president and CEO Sam Duncan announced Wednesday some major changes to his executive leadership team.

Minneapolis -- Supervalu president and CEO Sam Duncan announced Wednesday some major changes to his executive leadership team.

CFO Sherry Smith will leave the company, effective May 30, and no replacement has yet been named. Smith is a 26-year veteran of the company and has served as EVP and CFO since December 2010.

General counsel Todd Sheldon will also leave the company, effective May 30, to be replaced by Karla Robertson, who has been named EVP for legal, effective immediately.

The latest study on the risk posed by supply chain disruptions by Deloitte just hit the news. Executives were surveyed regarding feelings (or fears) about their exposure to unexpected events in their global supply chains. As you can imagine, most feel unprepared and report disruptions have become more costly. Negative outcomes in the global supply chain like costly margin erosion and demand change are all too common for most companies.

The Limited has established an interim “Office of the President” to manage the day-to-day operations of the business while it searches for a new CEO.

Columbus, Ohio -- The Limited has established an interim “Office of the President” to manage the day-to-day operations of the business while it searches for a new CEO. The retailer said that its chief executive, Linda Heasley, who joined in 2007, is stepping down to pursue other interests effective Feb. 15.
   
The interim office will be filled by three current executives, John Buell, EVP and CFO; Nicolas Frechette, SVP and general merchandise manager; and William Acevedo, SVP of stores; who will report to the board of directors.

Michaels Stores has named Chuck Rubin as CEO and a member of the board of directors.

Irving, Texas -- Michaels Stores has named Chuck Rubin as CEO and a member of the board of directors. Rubin is currently the president and CEO of Ulta Beauty.

Rubin will assume his new roles after a brief period of transition, at which time Michaels will discontinue the “Office of the Chief Executive Officer,” established on an interim basis in May 2012. Charles "Chuck" Sonsteby, a member of the Office of the CEO, will continue as Michaels’ CFO and chief administrative officer.

Overstock.com said Tuesday that chairman and CEO Patrick Byrne will take a leave of absence for medical reasons.

Salt Lake City -- Overstock.com said Tuesday that chairman and CEO Patrick Byrne will take a leave of absence for medical reasons. Company president Jonathan Johnson will assume Byrne’s CEO duties during the leave, although Byrne will remain chairman of the board.

Byrne, in recent years, had undergone various procedures regarding cardiac issues that may stem from his earlier episodes of cancer, and his leave of absence is associated with these cardiac issues.

Wet Seal said Cook has accepted a new position elsewhere, after joining Wet Seal in late 2011.

Staples Canada joined Alliance’s Air Miles Reward Program, under which reward miles are redeemed for more than 1,000 different rewards. The retailer will launch the program in-store and online in March.

The multi-year agreement will extend the retailer’s services with Revionics’ price optimization solutions, with Family Dollar leveraging Revionics’ solutions in each of its more than 7,600 stores in 45 states.

St. Louis -- Panera Bread Company announced that Roger C. Matthews, Jr., has been appointed Panera's EVP and CFO, effective March 18.

Matthews most recently served as managing director and sector head of the U.S. Restaurant Industry in Goldman Sachs' Investment Banking Division.

Pat Kelly, who has served as Panera's Interim CFO since April 2012, will remain in place until the end of March to ensure a smooth transition.
