I found the recent announcement that Microsoft and Best Buy had reached an agreement to roll out dedicated Windows “stores” in 600 Best Buy locations across North America this summer to be somewhat surprising, but certainly in line with the needs of both companies.

Apple Inc. and Sam’s Club are in early discussions to expand their partnership, possibly by adding in-store Apple shops in select Sam’s locations, according to a report on 9to5Mac, a website for Apple enthusiasts.

The report, which cited unnamed sources, said that a range of plans are being discussed, including having Sam’s simply sell a broader range of Apple products without in-store features.

Apple announced late Wednesday that its CEO Steve Jobs has resigned his post, effectively immediately, to be succeeded by current COO Tim Cook.

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple announced late Wednesday that its CEO Steve Jobs has resigned his post, effectively immediately, to be succeeded by current COO Tim Cook.

Jobs, the visionary whose contributions created the world’s most innovative technology company, is battling pancreatic cancer and has received a liver transplant. Concerns about his health led to his decision to resign.

Fewer people applied for jobs in the retail sector in June, according to the July Kronos Retail Labor Index.

Chemsford, Mass. -- Fewer people applied for jobs in the retail sector in June, according to the July Kronos Retail Labor Index.  The July report includes data for June 2011.

The number of applications received by retailers in the Kronos sample fell sharply in June 2011, to just 900,164 from a revised 1,149,879 in May, all on a seasonally adjusted basis. This was the lowest number of applications received since November 2007 and nearly 17%  below its level one year ago.

Apple reported a record second-quarter net profit of $5.99 billion, or $6.40 per diluted share, and revenue of $24.67 billion, thanks to strong sales in Macs, iPhones and iPads.

Cupertino, Calif. -- Apple reported a record second-quarter net profit of  $5.99 billion, or $6.40 per diluted share, and revenue of $24.67 billion, thanks to strong sales in Macs, iPhones and iPads. These results compare with net quarterly profit of $3.07 billion, or $3.33 per diluted share, and revenue of $13.5 billion, in the year-ago quarter. International sales also helped boost profits, as they accounted for 59% of the quarter’s revenue, the company reported.
