While strategic price discounts on key items continue to be a cornerstone of Target’s price competitiveness, rather than everyday low prices, Target’s overall basket has not been lower than Walmart’s since the January 2011 iteration of this study.

Dollar General is the overall basket price leader delivering a substantial savings to value shoppers, according to Kantar Retail’s second annual opening price point (OPP) survey.

Walgreens, for the second year, had the most expensive total basket, driven by sharply higher edible and non-edible grocery baskets.

A 3,500-sq.-ft. Walmart?
