Chicago -- Online grocer Peapod is taking its “virtual grocery store” concept on the road in a new promotional campaign. The company unveiled the concept at commuter rail stations in Chicago and the Northeast less than a year ago,

Peapod, a division of Ahold USA, will field trucks installed with digital billboards of grocery aisles at community recreation centers, coffee sleeves at local cafes, concert venues and other places.

Pine Tree Commercial Realty said its affiliate has acquired a Rainbow Foods grocery store in Bloomington, Minn.

Northbrook, Ill. -- Pine Tree Commercial Realty said its affiliate has acquired a Rainbow Foods grocery store in Bloomington, Minn.

The purchase expands the real estate development firm’s portfolio of shopping centers to include freestanding grocery stores.

The 64,130-sq.-ft. building is fully leased to Rainbow Foods, and features nearby retailers Target and Walgreens.
 
Rainbow Foods is a division of Roundy’s Supermarkets Inc.

The grocery industry, for the most part, lags in using online shopper insights for shopper and competitive advantage, according to a study developed in partnership with BeaconUnited, a national grocery broker, and ArchPoint Consulting, and powered by business intelligence firm Black Pearl Intelligence.

San Antonio -- The grocery industry, for the most part, lags in using online shopper insights for shopper and competitive advantage, according to a study developed in partnership with BeaconUnited, a national grocery broker, and ArchPoint Consulting, and powered by business intelligence firm Black Pearl Intelligence. Grocery-related social media conversations are now estimated at 10 million annually, yet many grocers are still slow to respond, the study found.

If you want to know how supermarkets are trending, just talk to the companies that acquire, build and operate the shopping centers that grocers anchor. Grocery-anchored centers are a specialty of certain real estate companies that have accumulated enough skill and category understanding to pick the right grocery retailer for the community or trade area, and to ensure that the grocer and the center remain relevant during changing market conditions.

Wm. Morrison Supermarkets PLC said Thursday that it has acquired a 10% stake in U.S. online grocer FreshDirect, based in New York City.

London -- Wm. Morrison Supermarkets PLC said Thursday that it has acquired a 10% stake in U.S. online grocer FreshDirect, based in New York City.

According to Morrison, the U.K. fourth-largest supermarket chain, the acquisition marks its debut in the online food market.

Morrison has also announced plans to test a c-store format and to expand its grocery store counts in order to increase its presence in the U.K grocery market.
