Family Dollar Stores Inc. plans to close about 370 underperforming stores , cut jobs and lower prices on 1,000 basic items on the heels of a disappointing second quarter.

Matthews, N.C. – Family Dollar Stores Inc. plans to close about 370 underperforming stores , cut jobs and lower prices on 1,000 basic items on the heels of a disappointing second quarter. The retailer is also slowing its new store growth beginning in fiscal 2015 to bolster its return on investment. It now anticipates opening 350 to 400 new stores as opposed to approximately 525 stores in 2014.

Target Corp. will celebrate Earth Day by distributing 1.5 million reusable bags in all of its stores on April 22.

Minneapolis -- Target Corp. will celebrate Earth Day by distributing 1.5 million reusable bags in all of its stores on April 22.

In addition, Target will offer guests simple, sustainable solutions and more than $50 in savings on sustainable products throughout April in our stores and via a limited-time website. The retailer also will partner with Recyclebank, an organization that promotes sustainable decisions by allowing individuals to earn rewards for actions like recycling and reducing water use.

Walgreens and Car Charging Group, a nationwide provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging services, have expanded EV charging services to 13 Walgreens locations in Orlando and Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla.

Miami Beach, Fla. -- Walgreens and Car Charging Group, a nationwide provider of electric vehicle (EV) charging services, have expanded EV charging services to 13 Walgreens locations in Orlando and Tampa/St. Petersburg, Fla.

The two companies plan to broaden their EV charging services with more locations in major metropolitan cities in Florida, as well as in other cities including Phoenix; Akron, Canton and Columbus, Ohio; and Austin, Texas.

Staples decreased electrical intensity of retail stores by 12% from 2007 to 2009 and reduced.

Framingham, Mass. Staples decreased electrical intensity of retail stores by 12% from 2007 to 2009 and reduced absolute greenhouse gas emissions by 21% from 2001 to 2009 in the United States, according to the company’s just-released corporate responsibility report.

The report, available at staples.com/soul, provides an overview of the company's corporate responsibility work and its global impact in the areas of community involvement, diversity, ethics and the environment.

Walgreens on Monday announced the opening of the nation’s first drugstore chain location to utilize.

Deerfield, Ill. Walgreens on Monday announced the opening of the nation’s first drugstore chain location to utilize geothermal energy for heating and cooling. The store, in Oak Park, Ill., is expected to reduce its energy usage by about 46% as a result of the geothermal system.

Walgreens worked on its Oak Park location with Evanston, Ill.-based Indie Energy, which specializes in designing and installing geothermal systems. The company’s Smart Geothermal technology system significantly cuts heating and cooling costs and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
