Greensboro, N.C. - The Fresh Market said Wednesday it has entered into agreements to lease four new store locations that are currently operated as Rice Epicurean Markets, a family-owned specialty food retailer based in Houston.

Rice Epicurean Markets will continue to operate the stores through the end of the year, and will close these four stores during the first quarter of 2013.

The Fresh Market said it has promoted Sean Crane to executive VP and COO, reporting directly to Craig Carlock, president and CEO.

Greensboro, N.C. -- The Fresh Market said Thursday it has promoted Sean Crane to executive VP and COO, reporting directly to Craig Carlock, president and CEO.

Crane was previously senior VP store operations. In his new role, he will lead store operations, merchandising and marketing functions.

Specialty grocer The Fresh Market reported Wednesday that net income for the second quarter rose to $10.5 million from $6.9 million a year earlier.

Greensboro, N.C. -- Specialty grocer The Fresh Market reported Wednesday that net income for the second quarter rose to $10.5 million from $6.9 million a year earlier.

Sales rose 13.6% to $259.5 million and same-store sales increased 4.6%, marking the seventh consecutive quarter of comps growth of 4% or greater.

The Fresh Market reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended May 1 rose to $13.5 million, compared with $12.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

Greensboro, N.C. -- The Fresh Market reported Thursday that net income for the quarter ended May 1 rose to $13.5 million, compared with $12.2 million in the year-ago quarter.

Sales increased 10% to $264.5 million and same-store sales increased 4.1%.

During the first quarter, the retailer opened one new store in Peachtree City, Ga., bringing the current store count to 101. Fresh Market said it expects to open 12 to 14 new stores during fiscal 2011.

Greensboro, N.C. The Fresh Market announced Wednesday that it has hired Goldman Sachs to explore a sale, after 25 years as a family-owned company.

The gourmet grocer, which operates 80 stores in 18 states, will explore outside investment opportunities.

“Because of our strong history, recent success and ongoing plans for growing the company, we are in a unique and ideal position right now to consider offers for outside investment,” the company said in a statement.

It added that it expects the process to take several months to complete.
