Whole Foods Market said it has received a 2012 Green Power Leadership Award for sustained excellence from the Environmental Protection Agency for its renewable energy purchase of 800 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) last year.

Austin, Texas -- Whole Foods Market said Tuesday it has received a 2012 Green Power Leadership Award for sustained excellence from the Environmental Protection Agency for its renewable energy purchase of 800 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) last year.  

The annual award recognizes leading green power purchasers for their commitment and contribution to helping advance the development of the nation's voluntary green power market.

Office Depot announced that it has been named to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of 2012 Energy Star Leaders for Leadership in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions.

Boca Raton, Fla. -- Office Depot announced that it has been named to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) list of 2012 Energy Star Leaders for Leadership in Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions. Office Depot’s significant energy reduction makes the retailer the first ever retailer in the United States to be recognized for a 30% or greater improvement.

In celebration of Earth Day, Stater Bros. said that six of the company's newest supermarkets in California have earned the prestigious EPA GreenChill Gold Award for meeting tough environmental standards and using ozone-friendly refrigerants.

San Bernardino, Calif. -- In celebration of Earth Day, Stater Bros. said that six of the company's newest supermarkets in California have earned the prestigious EPA GreenChill Gold Award for meeting tough environmental standards and using ozone-friendly refrigerants. The certifications are good for one year. Four of the locations also received GreenChill Gold Awards in 2011 (Grand Terrace, Moreno Valley, Cathedral City and Carlsbad).

Stater Bros. is the only Southern California grocer to have six stores that are certified at the Gold Level.

The award recognizes Kohl’s long-term commitment to protecting the environment through energy efficiency initiatives. Kohl’s was recognized by EPA in 2010 and 2011 as an Energy Star Partner of the Year, and in 2011 also became the first retailer to be named an EPA Green Power Partner of the Year for three consecutive years.

Kohl’s Department Stores and Walmart rank among the nation’s top purchasers of power according to the EPA’s most recent Green Power Partnership report.

New York City -- Kohl’s Department Stores and Walmart rank among the nation’s top purchasers of power according to the EPA’s most recent Green Power Partnership report. Kohl’s placed second in the ranking, while Walmart came in at third, followed by Whole Foods Market. Intel Corp. maintained its long-held top spot. Other retailers in the top 10 included Starbucks (No. 7) and Staples (No.9).

A report by Crain’s New York Business said that Lord & Taylor has signed a two-year contract with Green Mountain Energy Co. to provide the department store retailer with 100% of its electricity needs at two stores, including the Fifth Ave. flagship location.

New York City -- A Thursday report by Crain’s New York Business said that Lord & Taylor has signed a two-year contract with Green Mountain Energy Co. to provide the department store retailer with 100% of its electricity needs at two stores, including the Fifth Ave. flagship location.

The move has garnered the attention of the Environmental Protection Agency, which places Lord & Taylor, effective August, as No. 17 on the its Green Power Partnership list of Top 20 retailers embracing clean energy.

J.C. Penney Co. announced Thursday that it will up its participation in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program to 400 stores by the end of 2013.

Plano, Texas -- J.C. Penney Co. announced Thursday that it will up its participation in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program to 400 stores by the end of 2013. Energy Star certification is awarded to buildings that rank within the top 25% of similar commercial buildings nationwide by meeting strict energy performance levels set by the EPA.

J.C. Penney has a companywide goal to reduce facility energy use 20% by 2015.

Stater Bros. is the only Southern California grocer to have three stores that are certified at the Gold Level, which is the second highest award from GreenChill.

EPA's GreenChill Partnership works with supermarkets to reduce refrigerant emissions and decrease their impact on the ozone layer and climate change.

Staples on Monday said it has been named a 2011 Energy Star Partner of the Year in Energy Management by the EPA.

Framingham, Mass. -- Staples on Monday said it has been named a 2011 Energy Star Partner of the Year in Energy Management by the EPA. The chain has increased its renewable energy purchases and development to cover 53% of its total U.S. electricity consumption, more than double the company’s previous level.

Staples has also been named an Energy Star Leader by the EPA for reducing energy consumption by more than 11% across its facilities, based on EPA's standardized tools for tracking energy use.

Moorseville, N.C. -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named Lowe’s winner of the Energy Star Sustained Excellence Award in Retail for the second consecutive year. The 2011 award recognizes Lowe’s long-standing leadership as a retailer of energy-efficient products and will be presented to the company at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., on April 12.

Transportation budgets are taking a hit this year as diesel fuel costs continue to climb, topping $3.57 per gallon last month, roughly $0.74 higher than a year ago. For a retail fleet that travels 11.5 million miles a year, that adds almost $8.51 million in fuel costs over the 2010 spend. 


However Hannaford Supermarkets, based in Scarborough, Maine, has taken proactive measures in recent years that have increased efficiencies across its fleet of 100 tractors, helping to mitigate the pain of rising fuel costs.

Minneapolis -- Target on Wednesday outlined a series of comprehensive sustainability commitments. The retailer set several key milestones for resource use, waste elimination and carbon footprint reduction, which the company aims to achieve by 2016, including earning the Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star designation for at least 75% of its buildings.

The competition challenged teams from buildings across the country to see which commercial building could trim its energy use the most during a 24-month performance period. The EPA required utility-bill statements for verification of the energy loss.
