Walmart on Thursday said it plans to hire 60,000 temporary workers for the holiday season, an increase of nearly 10% from last year.

Bentonville, Ark. -- Walmart on Thursday said it plans to hire 60,000 temporary workers for the holiday season, an increase of nearly 10% from last year.

The discounter also said that current workers who want more hours during the holidays will receive priority.

So far, the November 2013 purchase of Saks Fifth Avenue by Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) is paying dividends.

Toronto – So far, the November 2013 purchase of Saks Fifth Avenue by Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) is paying dividends. HBC reported strong results during the second quarter of fiscal 2014, including a shrinking of its net loss from $81 million in the second quarter of the prior fiscal year to $36 million.

Primarily due to the addition of Saks revenue, total sales climbed 87% to $1.77 billion from $948 million. Consolidated same-store sales grew 1.9%. Digital sales were $162 million, including $116 million from Saks.

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that Wal-Mart violated Quebec labor law by closing its store in Jonquiere, Quebec, in 2005.

New York -- The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled that Wal-Mart violated Quebec labor law by closing its store in Jonquiere, Quebec, in 2005.
 
In a 5-2 decision announced on Friday, the court ruled that the 190 employees who were terminated when the store was closed are entitled to compensation, according to CBC Montreal.

Loblaw Cos. Ltd.’s acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. has been approved by Canada’s Competition Bureau.

New York -- Loblaw Cos. Ltd.’s acquisition of Shoppers Drug Mart Corp. has been approved by Canada’s Competition Bureau. The $12.4 billion (US$11 billion) deal is expected to close on March 28.

To win approval from the Competition Bureau, Loblaw agreed to sell 18 stores and nine in-store pharmacies.

According to Bloomberg, Wal-Mart detected fox DNA in samples of donkey meat from Chinese supplier Dezhou Fujude Food Company Ltd., and has since withdrawn all products from the company from its shelves.
