Zale swings to profit in Q3; names former CEO of Signet as chairman

Zale Corp. on Wednesday reported net income of $5.1 million for the third quarter, compared with a loss of $4.5 million in the year-ago period.

Dallas — Zale Corp. on Wednesday reported net income of $5.1 million for the third quarter, compared with a loss of $4.5 million in the year-ago period. The company also named Terry Burman as a director and as chairman of the board. Burman is the former CEO of Signet Jewelers Ltd., parent of Zale’s biggest rival, Kay Jewelers.

John Lowe Jr., Zales’ chairman for the past five years, will remain on the board.

Colliers: Shopping centers national vacancy rate down in Q1

The national vacancy rate for shopping centers dropped slightly from 10.09% to 10.06% in the first quarter of 2013, according to a study by global real estate services company Colliers International.

Marcus & Millichap Real Estate Investment Services said it has named Craig M. Fuller director of the firm’s National Retail Group and Net Leased Properties Group in Cleveland.

Fuller joined Marcus & Millichap in June 2008. He specializes in the sale of both multi-tenant and single-tenant net-leased retail investment properties throughout the Midwest with a special focus on Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Google made a quiet announcement that it is officially launching the pilot of its Google Shopping Express program, which features online delivery initially in the San Francisco Bay area.

San Francisco -- Google made a quiet announcement on Friday that it is officially launching the pilot of its Google Shopping Express program, which features online delivery initially in the San Francisco Bay area.

In a notice on the company’s website, Google Shopping Express product management director Tom Fallows described the program as a “new experiment,” one that offers “a local delivery service that we hope will make it possible for you to get the items you order online the same day, and at a low cost."

Saks names NYC flagship director

Saks Fifth Avenue announced Monday that John Cruz has been named SVP and director of the New York City flagship store, effective April 29.

New York -- Saks Fifth Avenue announced Monday that John Cruz has been named SVP and director of the New York City flagship store, effective April 29.

Cruz currently serves as VP and general manager of the company’s Beverly Hills store. He has worked at the NYC store before – as general manager 2005-2007 and VP and GM 2007-2010.

Cruz replaces Suzanne Stemper-Johnson, who is leaving Saks to pursue other interests.
