Michael Weiss, who started with Express when it was an eight-store operation, will retire as CEO of the 600 plus-store specialty apparel company when its fiscal year ends on January 30, 2015.

Columbus, Ohio -- Michael Weiss, who started with Express when it was an eight-store operation, will retire as CEO of the 600 plus-store specialty apparel company when its fiscal year ends on January 30, 2015.

He will be succeeded by David Kornberg, 46, president, who will assume the added role of chief executive. Weiss, 73, will remain with Express as nonexecutive chairman of the board.

The transaction, expected to close in May, is valued at approximately $62 million. Under the agreement, DSW will have the right to purchase the rest of Town Shoes after four years.

As a category of shopping center, open-air centers have been evolving ever since the days they were called lifestyle centers. New categories of tenants have evolved, along with new ways of creating compelling tenant mixes and environments. We asked three open-air owners to tell us about current and possible future directions that evolution may take.

The company’s stylish and contemporary 301,400-sq.-ft. store in Veracruz was named Store of the Year, and also took top honors in the Department Store category. It was designed by FRCH Design Worldwide, Cincinnati.

L Brands reported a 9% increase in same-store sales for January.

Columbus, Ohio - L Brands reported a 9% increase in same-store sales for January.  Analysts had expected an increase of 0.5%. The chain boosted its fourth-quarter earnings estimate.

Net sales for the 13-week fourth quarter, ended Feb.1, 2014, were $3.82 billion versus $3.86 billion in the 14-week year-ago quarter. Net sales were $3.8 billion for the 13 week fourth quarter ended Feb. 1, 2014 essentially flat with last year. Same-store sales were up 1%.

REI has signed a lease for a 23,000-sq.-ft. space in Sun Center in northwest Columbus, Ohio, according to Casto, Sun Center’s owner.

Columbus, Ohio — REI has signed a lease for a 23,000-sq.-ft. space in Sun Center in northwest Columbus, Ohio, according to Casto, Sun Center’s owner.

The space is part of an existing 60,000-sq.-ft. Hhgregg store. Hhgregg is downsizing its offering to 37,000 sq. ft., which is more typical of the Hhgregg’s prototype. Hhgregg will remain open during the redevelopment. REI expects to open in the fall of 2014.

Next fall, REI will open a 23,000-sq.-ft. store at Sun Center in Columbus, Ohio.

Seattle — Next fall, REI will open a 23,000-sq.-ft. store at Sun Center in Columbus, Ohio. That store will join a previously announced 23,400-sq.-ft. REI slated to open in the spring at Easton Gateway. The retailer opened its first Ohio store in Cincinnati in 2012.

REI is the nation’s largest consumer cooperative with 5.1 million active members and 132 stores.

Big Lots reported a net loss of $9.5 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2013, up from a net loss of about $6 million in the year-ago period.

Columbus, Ohio – Big Lots reported a net loss of $9.5 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2013, up from a net loss of about $6 million in the year-ago period. The retailer also said it will exit the unprofitable Canadian market, which it entered through an acquisition in 2011.

Net sales grew about 2% in the same period, to $1.15 billion from $1.13 billion, and consolidated same-store sales declined about 2.5%.

New York — Adding to existing locations in Manhattan and Miami Beach, Big Drop, the women’s clothing retailer, has leased a third New York City storefront at 253 Columbus Avenue in Manhattan’s Upper West Side. The new store has 650 sq. ft. on the ground floor plus a 400-sq.-ft. storage basement.

Winick Realty Group represented Big Drop in the long-term lease transaction. Parkway East Properties LLL, the landlord negotiated on its own behalf.

Big Drop’s other Manhattan stores are in SoHo and the Upper East Side.

Seattle -- Nordstrom announced two new locations for Nordstrom Rack, one in Columbus, Ohio, and one in Tulsa, Oak.

Nordstrom Rack will open at Sun Center in Columbus, Ohio. The approximately 37,890-sq.-ft. store is scheduled to open in spring 2014.

Nordstrom currently operates a full-line store in Columbus at Easton Town Center. The company opened the first Nordstrom Rack in the area at Easton Market on September 12, 2013.

Columbus, Ohio -- Rolfe Swinton, a creative, consumer insight and technology entrepreneur, has joined strategic brand and design firm Chute Gerdeman as CEO. Co-founders Denny Gerdeman and Elle Chute will become co-chairmen of the company.

Swinton founded and built Lumi Mobile, a provider of mobile-enabled consumer insight technologies backed by WPP and Australian billionaire Chris Morris. He also co-founded Reality Mine, the leading provider of passive mobile data collection and behavioral analytics.
