Spartan Stores and Nash Finch Company on Monday announced that they have entered into a definitive merger agreement under which Spartan Stores and Nash Finch will combine in an all-stock merger valued at approximately $1.3 billion, including existing net debt at each company.

Nash Finch, which had revenues of about $4.8 billion last year, will become a subsidiary of Spartan Stores, which had revenues of $2.6 billion.

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. reported a higher-than-expected third-quarter profit, helped by strong same-store sales.

Pittsburgh -- American Eagle Outfitters Inc. on Wednesday reported a higher-than-expected third-quarter profit, helped by strong same-store sales. The chain also raised its full-year earnings prompting it to raise its full-year forecast for the second time this year.

Net income for the quarter ended Oct. 27 rose to $78.6 million, from $52.4 million a year ago.

Sales rose 11% to $910 million. Same-store sales jumped 10%.

According to a Monday filing, Nardelli and Vassalluzzo will provide counsel toward improving Office Depot’s operations and strategies.

Atlanta -- Robert Nardelli, former Home Depot and Chrysler CEO, said Friday he is stepping down from his current post as CEO of firearms maker Freedom Group.

Nardelli held the Freedom Group post for just two months before deciding to depart.

He said in a statement Friday that it was a good time for him to focus on his investment and consulting company, XLR-8 LLC.

Freedom Group said it expects to name a permanent successor for Nardelli soon.

American Eagle Outfitters Inc. officially announced the retirement of its chief executive officer. The chain, which has seen its seen sales falter of late, also posted a 47% rise in profits for the fourth quarter on cost-cutting.

American Eagle said its CEO James O'Donnell, 70, will stay with the retailer until a successor is chosen and will work through the transition period. O'Donnell started with American Eagle as its COO in 2000. He became co-CEO in 2002 and CEO in 2003.
