Rapid advances in omnichannel technology in the past several years have radically changed the nature of POS. Instead of serving as simple transaction execution devices, POS systems now serve as links to a customer’s loyalty and behavioral history across all channels. In many instances, POS platforms also need to extend to mobile and customer self-service devices, connect to social networks and otherwise extend beyond standard fixed terminals.

In recent years, retailers have aggressively implemented in-store systems to track customers’ every move from the moment they enter till the moment they leave (hopefully including a trip through a checkout lane). Specific details such as how long customers spend in front of a display are also carefully monitored and analyzed. Technology now allows retailers to keep tabs on what customers do in the store almost as rigorously as they follow customer actions online.

Unless you have recently upgraded your point-of-sale (POS) systems, chances are the bioptic POS in your grocery store today can only scan 1D bar codes printed on the paper labels placed on items or on paper coupons. While that met the needs of yesterday’s POS, times have changed. And in order to provide your customer with the best possible experience at the POS, your POS needs to change too.

Traditionally, cash office management and the reconciliation process have relied on manual procedures, such as counting currency and coin by hand, creating handwritten check deposits, and keying totals into the POS system. Chain Store Age spoke with Michael Hanson, VP sales and marketing for Edison, N.J.-based Star Micronics America — a subsidiary of Star Micronics Company Ltd. and producer of point-of-sale printers for the retail industry — about how retailers can make the most of its point-of-sale printer technology and what they can expect from the devices moving forward.

Receipt printers on point-of-sale systems often bear the brunt of the checkout workload. The units break down, need paper replenishments and suck up energy. Instead of allocating big-budget dollars to install costly new point-of-sale systems all together, many retailers are making small but smart investments in durable, reliable and flexible printers that cut back on energy consumption, make the lines go faster and have a longer shelf life.
