With last year’s strong first quarter fueled by a firearms and ammunition sales surge, outdoor retailer Cabela’s Inc. saw this year’s quarter end on a less stellar note.

Sidney, Neb. -- With last year’s strong first quarter fueled by a firearms and ammunition sales surge, outdoor retailer Cabela’s Inc. saw this year’s quarter end on a less stellar note.

Revenue in the first quarter fell 9.6% to $725.8 million; retail store revenue decreased 9.4% to $440.9 million. Same-store sales plunged 21.7%, compared to the same period last year.

Net income was $25.7 million, compared to $49.8 million in the year-ago quarter.

Richard N. Cabela, co-founder and chairman emeritus of the $3.6 billion, outdoor outfitters chain, Cabela’s Inc., died Monday at his home in Sidney, Neb.

Sidney, Neb. -- Richard N. Cabela, co-founder and chairman emeritus of the $3.6 billion, outdoor outfitters chain, Cabela’s Inc., died Monday at his home in Sidney, Neb. No cause was given. He was 77.  

Cabela served as chairman of the board until June 2013, when he transitioned to chairman emeritus and his brother, Jim Cabela, became chairman.

Cabela’s Inc. on Thursday announced it will open four new markets in 2014: Acworth, Ga., Augusta, Ga.; Missoula, Mont.; and Barrie, Ontario (Canada). The outdoor goods retailer also reported that its second-quarter net income surged 31% on a 10.5% rise in same-store sales.

Dick’s brother, James W. Cabela, co-founder and currently vice chairman, will become chairman following the June 5 annual meeting of shareholders.

The new store, which will be the retailer's fourth location in Canada, is expected to in fall 2013 or spring 2014. The company will open a store in Rogers, Ark., on Aug. 30, and Union Gap, Wash., on Oct. 4.

Cabela’s Inc. announced that its has named Sean Baker president of World’s Foremost Bank and the division’s next CEO, effective Jan. 1.

Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s Inc. announced Thursday that its has named Sean Baker president of World’s Foremost Bank and the division’s next CEO, effective Jan. 1.

The move is part of a planned succession strategy that will put Baker in place as current CEO Joseph Friebe takes his previously announced retirement.

Baker began his career with Cabela’s as a financial analyst in 1997 and most recently served as senior VP business development, for World’s Foremost Bank.

Cabela’s Inc. announced today plans for two new stores, including its first-ever locations in Virginia and Delaware.

Sidney, Neb. -- Cabela’s Inc. announced today plans for two new stores, including its first-ever locations in Virginia and Delaware. Construction is expected to begin on the new locations in 2013, with the stores expected to open in 2014.

Cabela’s said it will build an 85,000-sq.-ft. store in The Falls, a new retail development in Bristol, Va., that will accommodate about 1.5 million sq. ft. of retail space.

In Delaware, the company will open a 100,000-sq.-ft. store adjacent to Christiana Mall, in Christiana.

Outdoor-gear retailer Cabela's Inc. reported that net income for the second quarter increased to $33.9 million, from $21.7 million in the year-ago period.

Sidney, Neb. -- Outdoor-gear retailer Cabela's Inc. reported Thursday that net income for the second quarter increased to $33.9 million, from $21.7 million in the year-ago period.

Total revenue rose 11.6% to $627.3 million, boosted by a 17% rise in retail store revenue – to $384.7 million. Analysts forecasted total revenue of $606.3 million.

Same-store sales increased 4.7%.

Cabela’s Inc. reported that net income for the first quarter rose a record 62% to $28.8 million, from $17.8 million last year.

Revenue increased 6.3% to $623.5 million, and same-store sales increased 4.2%.

For the quarter ended Dec. 31, 2011, Cabela’s revenue, increased 5.4% to $983.7 million, and same-store sales rose 1.7%. Retail store revenue increased 9.8% to $525.6 million.
