El Segundo, Calif. -- Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. reported upticks in net income, sales and same store sales for first quarter fiscal 2013. Net income grew from $156,000 to $7.5 million.
     
Net sales were $246.5 million, up from $218.3 million a year earlier, while same-store sales rose 10.5%. First quarter sales improved despite the negative impact of the calendar shift of the Easter holiday, when the retailer’s stores are closed.

El Segundo, Calif. -- Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp.'s quarterly profit beat Wall Street estimates, fueled by strong sales of apparel and footwear.

For the second quarter, ended July 1, the company posted net income of $2.6 million.

Sales rose 4% to $226.6 million, narrowly missing Wall Street estimates of $227.4 million, which the company attributed to July 4th-related sales shifting to the third quarter. Same-store sales increased 1.0%.

The company also gave a second-quarter earnings outlook much lower than Wall Street's view.

Big 5 reported late Tuesday that it earned $2.8 million for the period ended April 3, down from $5 million a year ago.
