The U.S. Senate on late Monday approved the long-debated Internet sales tax proposal, known as the Marketplace Fairness Act, by a bipartisan vote of 69 to 27.

The Obama administration has already endorsed the bill, but before it can become law it must be approved by the House, where Republicans are split on the bill.

Arlington, Texas -- Transwestern announced Tuesday that it has negotiated a new 9,994-sq.-ft. lease for Office Depot at Lincoln Square Shopping Center, located in Arlington, Texas.

The office supply retailer will open its smaller-footprint store – a 10,000-sq.-ft. prototype, downsized from the standard 20,000-sq.-ft. format.

Lincoln Square Shopping Center is a lifestyle shopping and dining center in North Arlington’s Entertainment District.

Record snowfall last season spelled trouble for many roofs and parking garage decks. The continuous storms that dumped more than 2 ft. of snow in New England alone had facility owners frantically addressing weight load issues as heavy snow and ice threatened, and in some cases caused, roof and deck top collapses. The fallout: a rise in lawsuits as owners, insurance companies and snow contractors battle over snow and ice procedures followed, or not, in comparison with written contracts.

Cake retailer Nothing Bundt Cakes said it is expanding its Texas presence with four new leases.

Dallas -- Cake retailer Nothing Bundt Cakes said it is expanding its Texas presence with four new leases.

The retailer worked with Venture Commercial Real Estate to negotiate new stores in Arlington, Frisco, Flower Mound and Rockwall.

Nothing Bundt Cakes entered the North Texas market in 2007 with a Southlake store and has since added locations in Dallas, Fort Worth and McKinney. The four new leases will bring the total to eight locations open by the end of 2011, with plans to open stores in Plano and the Lake Highlands area in 2012.

A report released Thursday by the Retail Industry Leaders Association found significant increases in shoplifting and pharmacy theft, in particular.

Arlington, Va. -- A report released Thursday by the Retail Industry Leaders Association found significant increases in shoplifting and pharmacy theft, in particular. According to RILA’s 2011 Crime Trends and Leading Practices Survey, more than half of respondents reported an increase in the frequency with which organized rings committed shoplifting, and 41% saw an increase in shoplifting by individuals acting alone.

Sixty-four percent of respondents reported an increase in theft of pharmaceutical products.

Economic forecasts for 2011 are a mixed bag for senior executives in retail companies. Executive compensation packages and salary increases are expected to be healthier than in the last two years, but the overall economy is, at best, in a state of stagnation. 


The Society for Human Resource Management, or SHRM, based in Arlington, Va., projected median salaries across all industries would rise 3% this year, compared with the more modest 2.5% increase that was the median in 2010.

“Our costs were skyrocketing because of high fuel costs,” said Dominguez, whose Florida territory also includes another six Wendy’s units in Orlando. “I wanted to save money on electric bills, plain and simple.”
