A guest approaches the concierge desk and asks for help finding a gift. The concierge knows the retail selection and can help. If the product is unavailable here, the concierge will, if necessary, send her to another store across town.

That sounds like Nordstrom service.

But this isn't Nordstrom. It is the concierge desk at The Americana at Brand in Glendale, Calif., a mixed-use development from Los Angeles-based Caruso Affiliated. It's what happens at every center in the Caruso Affiliated portfolio of 2.1 million sq. ft. of retail and residential properties.

The London-based architectural company has a history with Apple. It was hired by the late Steve Jobs to help design and create Apple’s new UFO-styled corporate headquarters, which is still under construction.

Three executives who had previously worked with Ron Johnson at Apple and then joined him at J.C. Penney have left the embattled department store chain in the wake of Johnson’s ouster, the New York Post reported.

According to the report, Mike Kramer, COO, Daniel Walker, chief talent officer, and Mike Fishe, chief creative officer, left Penney on Wednesday. The newspaper said Kramer resigned, but that it was not clear whether Walker and Fisher left voluntarily.

Apple Inc. will shut down 20 stores and move them to new, larger locations, according to the Los Angeles Times.

New York -- Apple Inc. will shut down 20 stores and move them to new, larger locations, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, said that the company is looking to relocate the stores in order to make them larger.

The company also will open 30 additional stores at new locations, mostly outside the United States, including its first location in Turkey.

Apple Inc. operates the most successful retail stores by a significant margin, according to RetailSails, a retail and consumer goods consulting firm.

New York City -- Apple stores around the world are pulling in an annual average of $4,709 sales per square foot, CNN Money reported.

While a handful of super-high-end luxury retailers with limited floor space in New York City and foreign capitols may do better, Apple’s numbers make it by far the most valuable chain in the United States. Apple’s closest chain competitor is Tiffany & Co., which garners an average of $2,974 per square foot, according to the report.

Minneapolis -- Target Corp. confirmed Thursday that it plans to install Apple mini-boutiques in some of its stores this year. The concept will be tested in 25 locations, and feature a wider assortment of Apple products than is currently available at Target, according to Bloomberg.

Apple on Friday unveiled a new glass entrance for its store on New York City's Fifth Avenue.

The original 32-ft. glass cube previously used 90 panes of glass. The new design has a more sleeker, slimmed-down look and features 15 larger, seamless panes. Apple also updated the plaza outside the store.

The total project cost Apple a reported $6.7 million.

New York City -- Apple is closing its stores for several hours on Wednesday so employees can watch a webcast of a memorial service celebrating the life of Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs, the Associated Press reported.

The service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at company headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. It will be webcast to employees worldwide.

The service reportedly will take place in the campus' outdoor amphitheater, according to Cook's email.
