New York -- British retailer Marks & Spencer takes a giant leap forward in its goal of becoming a multichannel leader with the opening of its innovative new concept store in Amsterdam. The centerpiece of the 5,000-sq.-ft. space — which marks M&S’ return to the Netherlands after a 10-year absence — is an “E-Boutique” dedicated to womenswear. The shop features what the retailer calls “the world’s first virtual rail,” a display that seamlessly integrates digital rails with physical rails of clothing samples.

Seattle -- Starbucks will open its largest location in Europe, in the center of Amsterdam, on March 9. The 4,500-sq.-ft. store is located in the vault of the historic Amsterdamsche Bank, a landmark building on Amsterdam’s famous Rembrandt Square.

St. Louis -- An affiliate of Sun Capital Partners and Kellwood announced an agreement to acquire Amsterdam-based fashion brand Scotch & Soda.  The deal is expected to close in August 2011 upon regulatory approval. Terms of the private transaction were not disclosed.

New York City -- Winick Realty Group announced that Island Burgers & Shakes, the 15-year-old burger restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen, has signed a lease for its second Manhattan location at 422 Amsterdam Avenue, between 80th and 81st Streets on the Upper West Side.

Island Burgers & Shakes will occupy 700 sq. ft. of ground-floor space, as well as a 500-sq.-ft. basement, when it opens later this year.
 

New York City -- Athletic goods and footwear company Asics has opened an ultra-modern flagship in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. The two-level store, located next to the city's legendary Vondelpark running center, has a sleek, futuristic design and offers several exclusive services, including advanced biomechanical and running analysis systems. Amsterdam -- Delhaize Group reported Wednesday that its third-quarter net profit rose 10% to $193 million, compared with a profit of $176 million in the year-ago period. Excluding currency effects, profit rose 2.7%.

The Belgian supermarket operator attributed the improvements to a stronger dollar against the euro, but also warned the retail environment in the United States remains challenging.

Revenue rose to $7.3 billion from $6.7 billion a year earlier.
