Whole Foods Market to build greenhouse atop Brooklyn store

Whole Foods Market announced that Gotham Greens will be its operating partner in the nation’s first commercial- scale greenhouse farm integrated within a supermarket.

New York -- Whole Foods Market announced that Gotham Greens will be its operating partner in the nation’s first commercial- scale greenhouse farm integrated within a supermarket. The 20,000-sq.-ft. greenhouse, which is currently under construction on the roof of the forthcoming Whole Foods Market store in Gowanus, Brooklyn, is scheduled to open in late 2013.

Starbucks acquires Teavana for$620 million in all-cash deal

Starbucks Coffee Co. announced it will acquire specialty tea chain Teavana Holdings for $620 million in a move to gain traction in the $40 billion global tea industry.

Seattle -- Starbucks Coffee Co. announced Wednesday it will acquire specialty tea chain Teavana Holdings for $620 million in a move to gain traction in the $40 billion global tea industry.

According to Starbucks chairman, president and CEO Howard Schultz, the coffee company plans to grow and expand Teavana’s 300 mall-based stores as well as add a neighborhood store concept to accelerate Teavana’s domestic and global footprint.

Sprouts Farmers Market and Sunflowers Farmers to merge

Sprouts Farmers Market, a Phoenix-based natural-foods supermarket chain, has reached an agreement to merge with competitor, Sunflower Farmers Market, based in Boulder, Col.

New York -- Sprouts Farmers Market, a Phoenix-based natural-foods supermarket chain, has reached an agreement to merge with competitor, Sunflower Farmers Market, based in Boulder, Col. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The combined company will operate 139 stores in eight states under the Sprouts banner, with annual sales of approximately $2 billion. It will open about 12 new stores this year.

“Our operations are very similar," said Sprouts president Doug Sanders, who will lead the combined supermarket company.

Sunflower Farmers Market to open second San Jose location

Organic grocer Sunflower Farmers Market said Monday that it will open a second location in San Jose in 2012, the company’s fourth in the Bay Area.

Boulder, Colo. -- Organic grocer Sunflower Farmers Market said Monday that it will open a second location in San Jose in 2012, the company’s fourth in the Bay Area.

Sunflower said it will anchor West Valley Shopping Center, and is slated to open the 32,000-sq.-ft. store in second quarter 2012.

“We knew we couldn’t control the price of our utilities, but we could control the usage,” said Jodenne Scott, energy efficiency manager, Shari’s Restaurants, Beaverton, Ore., which operates 104 locations, primarily in the Pacific Northwest (all are corporate-owned).

Acting CEO takes helm at Sunflower Farmers Market

Sunflower Farmers Market appointed Chris S. Sherrell as its CEO, the natural grocery chain announced Friday.

Boulder, Col. -- Sunflower Farmers Market appointed Chris S. Sherrell as its CEO, the natural grocery chain announced Friday. He has worked with Sunflower since its inception in 2002 and most recently served as the company's president and COO.

Sherrell has served as the acting CEO since the middle of February, shortly after Michael Gilliland, the company's founder and then-CEO, was arrested in Phoenix following a prostitution sting operated by undercover Phoenix Police Department officers.
