99 Cents Only Stores reported that profit for the quarter ended Dec. 29 rose 6.5% to $51 million, compared with $47.9 million in the year-ago period.

Total sales increased 8.8% to $35.6 million, from $403.9 million last year. Same-store sales rose 4.3%.

The company said it plans to open six stores during the fourth quarter, with most slated to open in California.

The retailer said that Eric Schiffer (CEO), Jeff Gold (president) and Howard Gold (EVP) are “no longer employed by the company” and that Richard Anicetti has been named interim CEO. Schiffer is the son-in-law of founder David Gold while Jeff and Howard are his sons.

99 Cents Only Stores said Tuesday it has leased 40 new compressed natural gas powered tractors from Ryder, which will replace diesel burning units with cleaner CNG rigs.

Commerce, Calif. -- 99 Cents Only Stores said Tuesday it has leased 40 new compressed natural gas powered tractors from Ryder, which will replace diesel burning units with cleaner CNG rigs.

The move is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the fleet and its CO2 emissions by up to 25%, said Eric Schiffer, CEO.  

The new CNG trucks will operate exclusively in the Southern California market, making store deliveries and picking up goods from vendors.

Commerce, Calif. -- 99 Cents Only Stores reported Wednesday that total third-quarter revenue rose to $403.9 million, from $365.4 million.

Sales at its namesake stores grew to $393.3 million from $354.1 million a year ago, just missing Wall Street’s expected $393.6 million in revenue.

For the quarter, same-store sales rose 8.5% on higher traffic and per-visit tickets.

Commerce, Calif. -- 99 Cents Only Stores reported Friday that same-store sales for the second quarter rose 6.7%. The news comes just days after the discounter agreed to a $1.6 billion buyout by private equity firm Ares Management LLC and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board.

Total revenue for the quarter ended Oct. 1 rose 8.8% to $363 million.

Family Dollar today showed why dollar stores are such a hot commodity right now by reporting a comparable-store sales increase of 5.1% for the second quarter ended Feb. 26.

Matthews, N.C. -- Family Dollar reported today a comparable-store sales increase of 5.1% for the second quarter ended Feb. 26. Net sales for the quarter increased 8.3% to $2.26 billion, from $2.09 billion last year. According to the retialer, warmer weather earlier in the year as well as strong performance in its consumable and seasonal categories helped drive sales.

The offer would value the company at about $1.3 billion. According to 99 Cents, the purchasers would include the Schiffer-Gold family, which owns about 33% of its outstanding stock. David Gold is company founder and chairman, and his son-in-law Eric Schiffer is CEO.
